One of Johns Hopkins' greatest treasures was recognized by the entire country on Dec. 2, when Leon Fleisher, the Andrew W. Mellon Chair in Piano at the Peabody Institute, received a lifetime achievement award at the 30th annual Kennedy Center Honors.

Fleisher and his fellow recipients — singers Diana Ross and Brian Wilson, comedian/writer Steve Martin and movie director Martin Scorsese — were feted for two days in Washington, D.C., at events that brought together the bold-faced names of Hollywood and the capital. A State Department dinner was held on Saturday and a White House reception with President Bush on Sunday.

"In the careers of these five Americans, we see the very definition of excellence and passion," Bush said in a videotaped speech shown at the gala. "They've given us music and laughter and distinctive moments in film."

The Kennedy Center Honors are one of the nation's highest artistic tributes. The gala will be broadcast Dec. 26 on CBS.
