New Twist on Holiday Giving

Employees can use seasonal parties and gift exchanges as a way to help local families in need through the Adopt-a-Family Program, sponsored by the Office of Faculty, Staff and Retiree Programs.

Gifts collected go to help at-risk youth, foster children and families in crisis. Faculty, staff members or departments "adopt" a person, family or agency and purchase gifts from a wish list written by the recipients.

For more information about the program or to submit an adoption request, go to www.jhu.edu/hr1/fsrp/adopt_fam.html or contact Sondra Ponzi at sponzi1@jhu.edu or 410-516-0338. Gifts and donations are due by Friday, Dec. 14.

Book Donations Needed

The Harriet Lane Clinic is in need of academic books appropriate to school- age children, grades 1 through 5, for its new Mentorship Program starting in January. To donate books, contact Lynette Forrest at 410-614-3865.

Holiday Turkey Program Deadline

The deadline is Friday, Dec. 14, for supporting the Vernon Rice Memorial Butterball Turkey Program. For information on how to purchase one or more $15 Butterball turkey gift certificates for local families in need, go to www.jhu.edu/~hr1/fsrp/butterball.html or contact Sondra Ponzi at sponzi1@jhu.edu or 410-516-0338.

Junior Achievement Biztown Event

The Office of Faculty, Staff and Retiree Programs has partnered with Junior Achievement to help Furman Templeton Elementary School students in West Baltimore. Johns Hopkins volunteers are needed for JA BizTown, an event designed to help fifth- grade students become "grown-ups" for a day by learning to hold a job, manage finances and develop an understanding of how to be a functioning adult in the community.

The program will be held from 8:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 10. Participants must attend one training session, from 6 to 8 p.m. on either Wednesday, Dec. 12, or Wednesday, Jan. 9, at the Junior Achievement office in Owings Mills.

For more information, contact Sondra Ponzi at 410-516-0338 or log on to www.jhu.edu/fsrp for links to this and other FSRP community service programs.
