Johns Hopkins is one of more than 440 private colleges
and universities now listed on the new
University and College Accountability Network, or U-CAN,
the first consumer information Web site of
its kind that features information solely provided by the
schools. Another 150 will be added this
month.
U-CAN, which went live Sept. 26, contains
institutional profiles that show statistical data in
easy-to-read graphic formats, narrative descriptions and
targeted links to the institution's Web site.
The site was created by the National Association of
Independent Colleges and Universities, the
largest organization representing nonprofit, private
institutions in the United States.
Bill Conley, dean of enrollment and academic services,
said that the U-CAN site offers a great
way for prospective applicants to get comparative
information about colleges and universities in an
easily accessible, and unfiltered, format.
"This site moves away from the ranking system
approach. Rather, it provides a searchable list
of schools that match the student's preferences," he
said.
The information listed on the standardized profiles
includes academic offerings, student
demographics, graduation rates, popularity of majors,
faculty information, class size, tuition and fee
trends, financial aid, campus housing, student life, campus
safety and other categories. U-CAN also
gives consumers easy access to such information as average
amount of loans owed at graduation,
ethnic diversity of the student body and community service
opportunities.
