ESL Fall Courses
The Language Teaching Center's English as a Second Language
program is this fall
offering Oral Communication: Listening and Speaking (intermediate
and advanced) and Academic and
Professional Writing (intermediate and advanced). Classes are
open to faculty, staff and students.
Placement tests will be given on the first night of class.
Oral Communication classes, which meet Monday and Wednesday
evenings, focus on
pronunciation and conversational practice. Pronunciation
assessments and accent reduction instruction
help students refine their language skills. Practice includes
developing oral presentations, giving and
following directions, and narrating and giving explanations.
Academic and Professional Writing classes meet Tuesday
evenings. Through readings, written
exercises and discussion of a variety of texts, students
strengthen their reading skills and expand
their vocabularies. Writing skills are targeted by a variety of
assignments that emphasize effective
sentence formation, paragraph development and essay structure.
The Language Laboratory is available for both courses.
Tuition is $795 per course, and space is limited. JHU
employees and their spouses are eligible
for tuition remission through their Benefits Office.
