English As a Second Language Summer Program

The English As a Second Language Summer Intensive Program will run from July 2 through Aug. 3. The full program provides over 25 hours a week of course work (intermediate, advanced and advanced plus levels), language lab practices and social activities designed to sharpen and refine speaking, reading and writing skills. Testing the first day of the program and advising throughout the five-week term guarantee placement in appropriate classes.

Morning classes, which meet Monday through Friday, include Oral Communication, Reading and Writing; afternoon classes, Monday through Thursday, include American Culture, TOEFL Prep and English for Medical Professionals.

Students have full access to the Language Lab for additional language activities.

After hours, students meet for conversation groups and social and recreational activities — movie nights, evening harbor sails, Orioles baseball game, and visits to Baltimore attractions.

The tuition for the full immersion program is $2,300. Students unable to attend the full program may select one or two courses for tuition of $795 per course. The deadline for registration is June 22.

Housing must be arranged separately. Limited housing is available for students 18 and older in university residence halls. Meal plans are optional. For more information on housing, go to the Housing and Dining Web site at www.jhu.edu/hds.

Students enrolled in the full program may obtain the J-1 visa. Visa application deadline is May 1. Visas are not granted for part-time study. For more information, go to www.jhu.edu/ltc/esl.
