Obituary: Jurg Niehans, 87, Professor of Economics From 1966 to 1977

Jurg Niehans, a professor of economics at Johns Hopkins from 1966 to 1977, died in Palo Alto, Calif., on April 23. He was 87.

A revered colleague and teacher, and a distinguished economist, he was the author of three major books in English — The Theory of Money, International Monetary Economics and A History of Economic Theory — several books in German and many articles. He was a professor at the University of Zurich before coming to Johns Hopkins, first as a visiting professor in 1961-62, and later, in 1966, as a professor.

He held the Abram G. Hutzler chair from 1973 to 1977, when he returned to his native Switzerland as a professor at the University of Bern. He came to Johns Hopkins again as a visiting professor in 1981. He retired in 1988 and moved to Palo Alto, where his widow, Trudy, now lives.
