The presidential search committee is headlong into the
process of interviewing candidates to
become the 14th president of The Johns Hopkins
University.
The board of trustees initiated its search for a
successor to President William R. Brody soon
after he announced on March 17 that he would retire Dec. 31
from the post he has held for more than
12 years.
In April, board chair Pamela P. Flaherty announced the
13 members of the Presidential Search
Committee, a group made up of university and Johns Hopkins
Medicine trustees, two faculty members,
a graduate student, an undergraduate and a staff member.
The search firm Russell Reynolds
Associates was selected to advise the committee.
Flaherty, who chairs the search committee, said that
the group is deeply engaged in its task to
identify the "very best leader" the university can find.
She said that the committee is searching for
"a special person," someone with "the right vision, skills
and commitment to build upon the legacy of
past presidents and make a university with a great heritage
even greater."
As detailed in its announcement of the opening, the
board of trustees says it "seeks an
individual willing to set an aggressive and ambitious new
agenda for Johns Hopkins' future."
To date, the committee has spoken with a
"considerable" number of candidates who come from a
wide variety of backgrounds. "Johns Hopkins has a wonderful
reputation, and everyone we have
contacted has expressed honor in even being considered,"
Flaherty said.
To begin the search process, Flaherty solicited input
from the university community. She said
that the committee is grateful for all the comments and
suggestions that have been submitted to the
search e-mail box and the willingness of the Johns Hopkins
community to participate in this way.

The committee, she said, has not set a hard deadline
for the completion of its mission. "Our goal
is to get the best possible person for Johns Hopkins, and
we are diligently working on it."
