School of Public Health names two associate deans

Thomas Burke has been appointed to serve as associate dean for public health practice and training at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, and Steven Teret has been appointed to the newly created position of associate dean for education and faculty development.

Both appointments were effective July 1.

 

Donations urgently needed at Homewood blood drive

The Red Cross has issued an urgent appeal for donations of types O and B blood, with all other types at critical levels. Since undergraduate students constitute up to 80 percent of the donors at Homewood campus drives and most are away for the summer, faculty and staff are urged to donate between 7:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9, in the Glass Pavilion. Lines are expected to be shorter than during the academic year.

A safe, desired blood supply is five to seven days' worth of any given blood type, in order to meet local patient need and maintain an adequate reserve in the event of an emergency. Blood donated at the Homewood drive goes to the Greater Chesapeake and Potomac Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross, which supplies blood to Central Maryland, including Baltimore; Washington, D.C.; Northern Virginia; and South Central Pennsylvania.

 

Ride on Baltimore-Annapolis trail to raise sarcoma awareness

Members of the Kimmel Cancer Center's Team Sarcoma are ready to ride — whether on bikes, in-line skates, scooters, skateboards or wheelchairs — as part of a national awareness campaign created by the nonprofit Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative. And they're looking for more colleagues to join in.

The event, scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, July 12 (rain date: July 19), will take place on the Baltimore-Annapolis trail, located on the scenic north shore of the Severn River.
