Last week, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and Rho Lambda
Sorority Leadership Society presented
the panel discussion "Determining Your Success: Female
Leadership in the 21st Century."
The event, held in Levering's Great Hall, featured
Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, Baltimore City
Council president; Joan Pratt, Baltimore City comptroller;
Kristina Johnson, the university's provost
and senior vice president for academic affairs; and Karen
Rothenberg, dean of the University of
Maryland School of Law. Scores of students gathered to
listen to the panel discuss the importance of
breaking barriers.
Jessica Turral, a sophomore psychology major and
one of the event's organizers, said that the
two sororities felt there weren't enough on-campus events
focused on female leadership.
"We wanted to change this," Turral said. "We need more
programs on campus that encourage
people to meet and talk to others from diverse backgrounds
and in a comfortable setting. I think we
achieved our goals."
