By Andrew Blumberg
Carey Business School

Sheila C. Bair, chair of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., is the scheduled speaker for the November installment of the Carey Business School's Leaders & Legends breakfast speaker series, to be held from 7:30 to 9 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 20, at the Renaissance Harborplace Hotel.

Named No. 1 in the Wall Street Journal's 2008 Women to Watch list and recently selected by Forbes magazine as the second most powerful woman in the world, Bair is the 19th head of the FDIC, which insures deposits in U.S. banks and thrift institutions. It also addresses risks and limits financial repercussions to the economy and the financial system when a bank or thrift institution fails.

Bair, whose remarks are titled "Today's Credit Crisis and the Involvement of the FDIC," has served on the FDIC's Advisory Committee on Banking Policy and as assistant secretary for financial institutions at the U.S. Treasury, where she helped formulate the administration's positions on banking policy issues. She worked closely with Treasury's own banking regulatory bureaus, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and the Office of Thrift Supervision, as well as the Federal Reserve Board and the FDIC.

Leaders & Legends, a monthly breakfast series, features influential business and public policy leaders and is designed to engage business and community professionals in an examination of the most compelling issues and challenges facing society.

Admission to the event, which includes breakfast, is $35. To register and for more information, go to carey.jhu.edu/leadersandlegends.
