The Poulenc Trio

The Hopkins Symphony Orchestra, led by music director Jed Gaylin, will end its 25th anniversary season with Aaron Copland's Symphony No. 3 and the world premiere of Gaetano Panariello's Triple Concerto: Omaggio all'opera buffa. The concerto will be performed by the Poulenc Trio: Vladimir Lande, oboe; Bryan Young, bassoon; and Irina Lande, piano.

Panariello, director of the Conservatory of Avellino, Italy, is a prolific composer of musical theater for youth, as well as ballet, oratorio and opera. He will travel to Baltimore to attend the premiere.

The concert will take place at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 27, in Homewood's Shriver Hall. A pre- concert talk with the composer and musicologist Max Derrickson will begin at 2 p.m.

Panariello's new work is an homage to 18th-century Italian comic opera, with each movement featuring one of the soloists in an operatic role. The bassoonist is a "comic basso," perhaps a resourceful servant or a gullible old man. The pianist is a daydreamy young woman of good family who awaits her Prince Charming. The oboist portrays the cunning tenor, the Pulcinella.

The Poulenc Trio, which recently concluded a Russian tour with violinist Hilary Hahn, commissioned the new work, which is dedicated to them.

Many consider Aaron Copland's third symphony to be the quintessential American symphony. The massive work, composed in 1946, features the beloved "Fanfare for the Common Man."
