Commemoration Day event rescheduled for Wednesday

With bad weather forecast for Feb. 22, Commemoration Day, the administration decided to reschedule the party planned for that day.

The celebration of the university's 132nd birthday will now take place from noon to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 27, in the lobby of Levering Union, Homewood campus. Cake will be served, and all who attend are encouraged to wear Johns Hopkins paraphernalia. The first 500 students with ID who do so will receive long-sleeved T-shirts bearing the likeness of Johns Hopkins himself.

 

FSRP offers discounted tickets for shows at Hippodrome Theatre

Discounted tickets for upcoming shows at the Hippodrome Theatre/France-Merrick Performing Arts Center are now available for Johns Hopkins affiliates, courtesy of the Office of Faculty, Staff and Retiree Programs. Tickets purchased online by Friday, Feb. 29, will be priced 10 percent to 20 percent off regular admission on a variety of seating options for The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley, 6:30 p.m. on March 13; The Ten Tenors, 6:30 p.m. on March 16; David Copperfield--An Intimate Evening of Grand Illusion, 6 p.m. on March 22; and Camelot, 8 p.m. on March 26 and 6:30 p.m. on March 30.

Nursing's Birth Companions program honored with award

Premier Inc. and its member hospitals have again recognized the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing Birth Companions program for its advocacy, education and support in improving maternal and newborn outcomes for Baltimore's underserved pregnant women.

The program was one of six organizations nationally recognized as a finalist for the 16th annual Monroe E. Trout Premier Cares Award, which honors exemplary efforts by not-for-profit organizations to improve access to health care for the underserved. Representatives from the Birth Companions program were recognized and presented with a cash award of $24,000 during Premier's recent annual Governance Education Conference.

Since 1999, nursing students trained as birth companions have provided free doula care to poor women in the greater Baltimore area. The students partner with mothers before birth, throughout labor and after birth with emotional, informational and physical support.

"Through the Birth Companions program, our students have outstanding opportunities to learn and use their skills in serving families, and [it] has enhanced the community outreach focus of the school," said instructor Shirley Van Zandt.

Expectant mothers working with birth companions are less likely to have pre-term or low birth weight newborns. The student nurses benefit from learning about the diverse health needs and health care preferences among different ethnic populations.

Betty Jordan, assistant professor in Community Public Health Nursing, coordinates the program.

 

WMAR to broadcast program on Johns Hopkins Children's Center

To help raise awareness of the medi- cal achievements at Hopkins Children's, WMAR has donated air time for a program titled "Johns Hopkins Children's Center: Today's Discoveries, Tomorrow's Cures," to be aired at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 29, and 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 1, the same weekend as the 19th annual Radiothon on MIX 106.5. The hour features inspirational patient stories that highlight the center's faculty and staff, and viewers will be encouraged to make a donation by calling 410-823-1065 or by logging onto www.hopkinschildrens.org.

 

SoN to hold memorial service today for Jeannine Baker

The School of Nursing will celebrate the life of Jeannine Baker, former director of the Office of Student Financial Services, at a memorial service to be held today, Feb. 25. Baker died from brain cancer on Jan. 17 at the age of 58. The event is scheduled for 4 p.m. in the Carpenter Room. To RSVP, e-mail sangell@son.jhmi.edu.

Faculty, students, staff and friends from throughout Johns Hopkins are encouraged to attend, and to share their memories of Baker through photos and written anecdotes that will be compiled in a memory book for her family. Those unable to attend may send items for the book to Phyllis Wilcox at the Office of Student Financial Services.

 

SAIS Black History Month event to feature Rep. Charles Rangel

Charles B. Rangel, Democratic congressman from New York and chairman of the House Committee on Ways and Means, will be the featured speaker at a Black History Month celebration hosted by SAIS at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 27. Rangel will speak about international trade policy.

The event, sponsored by the SAIS African Diaspora Association and SAIS Trade Club student groups, will be held in the Nitze Building's Kenney Auditorium. Non-SAIS affiliates should RSVP to sjankowsky@jhu.edu or 202-663-5705.
