On the 135th anniversary of Johns Hopkins' death, employees, alumni and friends of the university and hospital that bear his name gathered at his graveside to remember the institutions' benefactor. The informal Dec. 24 ceremony — an event that draws scores of appreciative attendees to Green Mount Ceremony each year — included a brief talk by Nancy McColl, director of the Medical Archives, on "The Legacy of Johns Hopkins' Conscience." Mr. Hopkins, who died on Christmas Eve 1873, directed that his $7 million estate be used in equal parts to establish the two institutions in Baltimore whose mission would be to do good in the world. It was, at the time, the largest philanthropic bequest in U.S. history.
