Black Student Union Turns 40, Celebrates Black History Month

The Homewood campus is celebrating Black History Month in February with events organized by the university's Black Student Union, which is marking its 40th anniversary this year. Founded in the wake of the Baltimore race riots in 1968 after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., the Black Student Union continues its original mission to ensure that all students have a voice within the student population regardless of race and ethnicity.

Under the theme "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised: Taking Charge of Change," the BSU planned discussions and cultural events that will extend through Friday, Feb. 27. Here's what's on this week's calendar:

Tuesday, Feb. 10, 5:30 to 7 p.m. Discussion: "Do We Need Black Politicians?" Learn about the changes in politics through the years and the evolution of political leaders within the black community. 304 Charles Commons.

Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 10 and 11, 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. A blood drive and bone marrow registration in honor of Charles Drew, the pioneering African-American physician whose research made it possible for people to donate and receive blood. Thursday, Feb. 12, 4:30 to 6 p.m. Center for Africana Studies discussion: "The Price of the Ticket: A Genealogy and Revaluation of Race," led by Jacqueline Scott, associate professor of philosophy at Loyola University Chicago. Shriver Hall Board Room.

Thursday, Feb. 12, 5 to 7 p.m. Nonprofit/professional showcase: Representatives from various organizations and companies will be on hand to talk about what they do and how students can get involved. Mattin Center, Office of Multicultural Affairs lounge.

Friday, Feb. 13, 3 to 5 p.m. A discussion with artist Antonio Ole, who works in a variety of media, including paint, film, photography, sculpture and installation. After studying at UCLA and the Center for Advanced Film Studies, he returned in 1985 to his native Angola, where he continues to live and work. He has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the world. 113 Greenhouse.

Friday, Feb. 13, 7 to 9 p.m. Multicultural Greek Block Show, featuring stepping by members of Johns Hopkins fraternities and sororities. Learn about the organizations and their influence in positively changing the community. Levering Union, Glass Pavilion.

Saturday, Feb. 14, 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Party Through the Decades Dance-a-thon, celebrating 40 years of the Black Student Union. Dance to music from the 1960s through the present and help raise money for the Don Miller House, an assisted-living facility in Baltimore for adults with end-stage AIDS. $5, suggested donation. Levering Union, Glass Pavilion.
