The Verizon Foundation and Sherry Bellamy, vice president and deputy general counsel for Verizon Business, jointly have provided funding for a project in the Johns Hopkins Hospital Emergency Department that uses a remote-presence robot to reduce the time patients must wait for consultations by clinical specialists. Using laptop computers that control a robot in the ED, on-call specialists can respond to requests for assistance immediately from wherever they may be, whether it's another location in the hospital, across the city or elsewhere. They can "drive" the robot throughout the department to see and talk with staff, patients and their families, visually examine patients and view test results and other information.
