School of Nursing Names Associate Dean for Academic
Affairs
Pamela Jeffries has been named associate dean for academic
affairs at the Johns
Hopkins University School of Nursing. She was
previously at the Indiana University School of Nursing,
where she held the position of associate dean of
undergraduate programs.
Jeffries is nationally known for her expertise in
experiential learning and her innovative teaching
strategies and delivery of content using technology and
simulations in nursing education. She served as the project
director for the national simulation study funded by the
National League for Nursing and the Laerdal Corp. from 2003
to 2006 and is now the project director for a second NLN
and Laerdal grant to create nine Web-based modules for
faculty development in simulation. In addition, she has
received multiple awards for teaching excellence, has
numerous publications in teaching and research, and has
received more than $1.5 million in grants, fellowships and
awards.
She currently is conducting a multisite cardiovascular
study working with renowned researchers Michael Gordon and
Barry Issenberg from the Gordon Center for Research in
Medical Education and the Miller School of Medicine at the
University of Miami. The research is focused on testing a
deliberative practice curriculum using simulations to teach
advanced practice nurses cardiovascular assessment,
knowledge and skills. The study, to be conducted at four
schools of nursing across the country, will help determine
and validate whether the deliberative practice curriculum
using the Harvey simulator is an effective, efficient
intervention to improve cardiovascular bedside skills of
advanced practice nurses.
