Sprucing Up HUT

As a parting gift, the Class of '97 will give the Hutzler Undergraduate Library a much needed facelift. This year's senior class gift will benefit the popular HUT located on the second floor of Gilman Hall on the Homewood campus.

So far, senior class gift chairs Alex Gershman, Amy Flood and Adrienne "Coco" Graage have raised about $6,000, with about $1,000 more expected to be added to the pot from outstanding pledges. The Johns Hopkins University Friends of the Library will match the money raised by the senior class with a $15,000 gift.

The money will go toward buying some new, comfortable furniture in the 24-hour study lounge and library, enlarging its newspaper and magazine collection, building new bookcases, purchasing a hot beverage vending machine (late-night coffee breaks) and wiring study tables so students can plug in laptops and be hooked into the Internet.

Gershman said that he and his co-chairs are pleased with the level of support they've received from their fellow poor starving college students. It is an annual tradition that the graduating class raises money from its members to fund a project that will in some way improve the campus life they leave behind.

"We e-mailed and wrote letters to everyone asking what they wanted to donate money to, and this is what they came up with," he says. "It's one of the most highly trafficked areas of campus and the only library open 24 hours a day. It's an important place on campus for the students."
