Fair Weather Fun

Johns Hopkins Gazette Online Edition

It was a weekend of music, food and fun as people spun around motorized rides, devoured powdered dough and ethnic foods, played games of chance, took a ride on a baby elephant, jousted with inflatable batons or, perhaps, just used this occasion to give their dogs a walking tour of the Homewood campus.

Falafel, gyros, lemonade and more beckon hungry visitors to Gilman's doorstep.

Despite one day of rain, sunshine and smiles prevailed for most of this year's Spring Fair as thousands came out to enjoy the 27th annual event, held April 17 to 19. The theme--Odyssey '98--brought out laurel wreath-wearing workers and a huge Trojan horse to oversee the proceedings from a perch overlooking the lower quad. Even Sunday's rain couldn't douse the spirits of senior Marcus D'Amelio and a small group of friends as they huddled together near the massage tent. "Yes, it's dark and wet," D'Amelio shouted, "but we're still having fun."

Proceeds will help support student activities and local charities, among them the YWCA of Greater Baltimore and Health Care for the Homeless.

Sometimes it's a zoo out there on Garland Field.

When the sun shines on Spring Fair, everything is just ducky.
