The Johns Hopkins Initiative, having surpassed its $900 million goal in mid-April, stands at $916 million, or 75 percent of its new $1.2 billion goal.

Following are some recent campaign commitments.

Grace B. Chambers has announced a substantial bequest intention to the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences to endow the Chambers Professorship in Chemistry. Grace Chambers previously established the Ivan and Arthur Chambers Fellowship Fund at the School in memory of her husband, Ivan, and her father-in-law, Arthur. Arthur Chambers received his doctorate in chemistry from Hopkins in 1896. Years later, the DuPont Company named its Chambers Works for him.

The Theodore and Vada Stanley Endowed Chair in Neurovirology has been established in the Department of Pediatrics at the School of Medicine with a pledge of $2 million from the Stanley Foundation. The chair will be held by the director of the newly created Division of Pediatric Neurovirology. The endowment will support research on brain disorders, especially schizophrenia and bipolar disorders, which may be caused by infections in infancy and childhood.

A bequest of $639,000 to the School of Nursing from Eleanor Wade Custer, Nurs '30, has provided support for the new building and also has endowed graduate student scholarships in her name. The dean's suite in the Pinkard Building has been named in her memory. Before her death, Eleanor Wade Custer created a fund to support faculty engaged in community health nursing.

The late Doris L. Bauernschmidt left $700,000 to the Wilmer Eye Institute to fund research on macular degeneration. She had given more than $30,000 during her lifetime for the same purpose.
