As of Feb. 28, the Johns Hopkins Initiative campaign had reached $867 million, or 96 percent of its $900 million goal. Gifts and pledges for endowment and facilities total $502 million, or 96 percent of the $525 million goal for these campaign priorities.

Some recent gifts to the campaign include the following.

Baltimore Gas and Electric has committed $1 million to the School of Continuing Studies to endow scholarships and $500,000 to the School of Medicine for the University Fund for Medical Discovery, which supports research by young scientists. The BGE Scholarship Fund will assist undergraduate and graduate students at SCS, with several of the scholarships designated for students in the Leadership Development Program for Minority Managers. The gift to Medicine will support cancer research.

The University Fund for Medical Discovery also will benefit from a commitment of $1 million from Willard Hackerman, Engr '38, and Whiting-Turner Contracting, which he heads. Hackerman has previously made generous commitments to Johns Hopkins Medicine and the Whiting School of Engineering.

Anthony S. Felsovanyi, Med '41, and his wife, Shirley B. Felsovanyi, of Menlo Park, Calif., have given $500,000 to establish an annuity that will provide unrestricted funds to the dean of the School of Medicine. Anthony Felsovanyi previously established a $1 million unitrust.

A $246,000 grant from the Ford Foundation will allow the Hopkins-Nanjing University Center for Chinese and American Studies to upgrade the information technology system in its library.
