Defining Generation X:
Greg Louganis Dives
Into MSE Symposium

Looking as tanned and fit as the day he won his last gold medal in 1988, Olympic diver and AIDS activist Greg Louganis told a packed Shriver Hall Thursday night about his battle against AIDS and the lessons he's learned as he's journeyed toward self-acceptance.

With humor and disarming honesty, he urged students to "love themselves enough to protect themselves" and to realize that personal freedom only comes when one relinquishes one's secrets.

Students were visibly moved during many moments of his talk, and when he was finished, they offered him a long, loud standing ovation.

This week at the symposium: Eric Liu, founder of The Next Progressive, a journal of political thought produced by men and women in their 20s, will speak on politics on Tuesday. On Thursday, supermodel Tyra Banks will talk about race and fashion. All symposium lectures are held at 8 p.m. in Shriver Hall and are free and open to the public.
