Designer Genes Summer Film Series at JHMI

The current genetic revolution and the controversial issues surrounding it will be explored on Wednesday evenings in the 1998 Summer Film Series presented by the JHMI Office of Cultural Affairs.
   Each film will be followed by a discussion led by a guest speaker. Showings are at 7 p.m. in the PCTB Mountcastle Auditorium, 725 N. Wolfe St., and are free and open to the public. For more information, call 410-955-3363.

July 8: Gattaca
This futuristic thriller centers around a genetically altered society of have and have-nots. Discussant is Tom Kefauber, owner of the Senator Theater.

July 15: The Fly
A scientist's matter-manipulating experiments backfire, transforming him into a common house fly. Discussion is Maria Farland, who was recently elected to the Columbia University of Fellows. She received her doctorate from Hopkins and taught courses in American history and culture at Wesleyan University.

July 22: Vertigo
In one of Hitchcock's most discussed films, a retired police detective with a fear of heights is hired by an old chum to keep his eye on his wife. Discussant is Jerry Christensen, professor of English and director of Film and Media Studies.

July 29: Island of Lost Souls
The H.G. Wells horror classic with Charles Laughton, who tries to make jungle beasts into half-human abominations. Discussant Matt Gross received his B.A. and M.A. in the Writing Seminars and was a film critic in Vietnam for the Vietnam News.

Aug. 5: Twelve Monkeys
A 21st-century convict, who can obtain a pardon by taking an experimental trip back to 1996, unravels the clues that will help destroy a deadly virus capable of wiping out the human race. Discussant Jason Ravenel is in his third year of graduate study in the School of Medicine program in Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology. He holds a B.A. with high distinction in film studies from the University of Rochester.
