United Way Campaign Bounces Into Record Book

Engineering Dean Don Giddens had been concerned by the
prospect of changing from Hopkins' long-standing tradition of a
semester-long United Way campaign to an October blitz. But he had
nothing to worry about.

At the annual United Way "Thank You Breakfast" on Thursday,
Giddens and United Way administrator Judy Peregoff reported the
university's 1995 campaign exceeded its goal of $573,700 and was
just $6,000 shy of $600,000, a university record.

In congratulating Giddens, Eugene Sunshine, vice president
for administration, told the audience that while he knew all the
good things about the dean, he hadn't realized one bad thing
about him.

"You're a lousy basketball coach," Sunshine teased him.

Giddens admitted that his squad of Engineering faculty,
staff and students was terribly outgunned in their first-round
route by the ROTC team in the first United Way basketball
tournament. But he was pleased that the event, organized by Lynn
O'Neil, Julia Nardi, Bill Harrington and Barbara Fisher, raised
another $1,800 for the campaign.

ROTC won the four-team event by beating the administration
team, 43-39.
