Principe to be honored for teaching award

There will be a celebration of undergraduate teaching at Johns Hopkins at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8. At this event, Lawrence Principe, an assistant professor in the departments of Chemistry and the History of Science, Medicine and Technology, will receive the "Maryland Professor of the Year" award. But because the national organization honoring Principe--and 51 other winners from around the country--will not release the official announcement until the morning of Oct. 8, details cannot yet be disclosed.

What we can say is this: Principe has earned several Hopkins teaching awards since his arrival in 1989, and he is among the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences' most popular faculty members with students. Several undergraduates wrote letters of recommendation in support of Principe's nomination to the national organization sponsoring the competition, and students will be on hand Thursday to present the award to him.

The university community is encouraged to join students and faculty of his two academic departments for the ceremony, award presentation and a talk by Principe, in Remsen 1 on the Homewood campus. Then all are invited to a reception in his honor, which will be held in 140 Remsen.

For more information, call the Chemistry Department at 410-516-7791.
