A Collegial Farewell
Mashburn (l) and Simpson With this issue we bid farewell to two important members of the magazine's staff: senior writer Joanne Cavanaugh Simpson and assistant editor Mary Mashburn.

Joanne joined our staff in the summer of 1997, and over the years her articles have taken her around the globe -- to Cuba and Nanjing, China -- among other locales. An ambitious writer and tenacious reporter, she was always eager to tackle our toughest, most complicated stories. Remember "Seeing Red," the story of Hopkins professor Owen Lattimore, who courageously battled "McCarthy's 'Moonshine'" (September 2000)? Or our September 2001 cover story, "Pregnant Pause"? Both were vintage Joanne. She was key to the magazine's winning several gold medals in staff writing and higher education issues reporting from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), as well as the coveted Robert Sibley Award, in 1998.

Joanne decided to leave her staff post in order to devote more time to baby Chloe, who arrived last fall. We'll miss Joanne's energy, spirit, and professionalism around the office, but -- thankfully -- will continue to benefit from her talents: She's agreed to write for the magazine as a freelancer.

Mary Mashburn made important contributions to every area of the magazine during her two years here. It's rare to find someone who is such a talented "triple threat": a topnotch designer, astute editor, and capable reporter/writer. Mary is that person, and we'll miss her dearly. She played a vital role in defining and shaping the "Wholly Hopkins" section of the magazine, and her lively voice and creativity could be felt throughout the magazine's features and other departments as well (witness her witty approach to commencement in "Diplomaville," June 2001 and "All-Star Statues," June 2002). Mary will be returning to the successful freelance design career she had pursued before joining our staff. We're grateful for the time she spent with us.
