The manners maven
For 10 years, P.M. Forni has navigated the little-studied world of civility


'The decline of civility is a social phenomenon that is being discussed now with the frequency and intensity that was not there 10 years ago,' says P.M. Forni, a professor of Italian literature in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences.

Though Pier Massimo Forni may jokingly refer to himself as "a self-appointed manners maven," he takes civility studies very seriously. Ten years ago this fall, Forni co-founded the Johns Hopkins Civility Project — now known as the Civility Initiative at Johns Hopkins — and heightened the awareness of our need to be kind to each other.

United Way: New fund to aid neighbors
The university's 2007 United Way of Central Maryland campaign, which kicks off today, will feature two new ways of giving. Most notably, employees will be able to designate all or part of their donation to the new Johns Hopkins Neighborhood Fund, which supports agencies that serve communities in close proximity to Johns Hopkins campuses and have a strong relationship with the university and its employees.
