Homewood's HERUs
They don't wear capes and Lycra tights, or have secret identities obscured by masks. But for the past 20 years, the student volunteers behind HERU -- the Hopkins EmergencyResponse Unit -- have been the Homewood campus's superheroes.
   Organized in 1983 as the First Aid Squad, the undergraduate group has expanded its services over the years to provide 24-hour emergency care to faculty, staff, students and visitors, treating minor injuries or summoning medical professionals for more severe cases. Full story...

JH's impact on the state's economy
The Johns Hopkins Institutions, already Maryland's largest private employer, have added more than 3,000 Maryland jobs to their payrolls over the past three years, a new analysis of the institutions' economic impact has found.
    In fiscal year 2002, the institutions employed 41,028 people in Maryland teaching, research, patient care and administrative or support jobs. That was an increase of 3,096 jobs, or 8 percent, from the 37,932 reported in 1999. During the same three-year period, the total number of jobs in Maryland grew only 4.5 percent. Full story...

SAIS names former ambassador as director of Bologna Center
The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies has named Marisa R. Lino, former U.S. ambassador to Albania, as the new director of its center in Bologna, Italy. This post will be her third in that country. In her longtime career in the State Department, she served as consul general in Florence from 1990 to 1993 and as a management officer in Rome from 1983 to 1985.
   Lino will assume the position on Aug. 1, succeeding Robert Evans, who is retiring after 11 years as director of the Bologna Center. She will be responsible for the academic and administrative components of the center and also will teach one course each semester. Full story...
