Engineering names new dean
Nick Jones, former faculty member, to be fourth head of
Whiting School
Any new dean has a learning curve to climb. For Nick
Jones, however, the climb may not be quite so steep. He's
been here before. On the recommendation of President
William R. Brody, the university's board of trustees last
week appointed Jones — who has spent almost all of
his career at Johns Hopkins — as the fourth dean of
the Whiting School of Engineering, effective Aug. 15.

Montgomery Campus eyes research
opps
The opening next month of the Montgomery
County Campus' third building will represent a
significant milestone for a university that will now be
"fully engaged in securing a Hopkins-quality, significant
research presence" on that campus, according to Gary
Ostrander, associate provost for research at Johns
Hopkins.

Hopkins founds first center for
epigenetics
With a $5 million five-year federal grant, the Johns
Hopkins School of Medicine is establishing what is believed
to be the first university-based research center devoted to
studying epigenetics, an effort that will set the stage for
learning as much about our epigenetics as the Human Genome
Project taught about the sequence of building blocks that
make up our genes.
