Making a Splash

The young men treading water in this photograph — if you think it looks easy, try it yourself — comprise the nation's best Division III men's collegiate water polo team. The 2005 Jays won 24 of their 30 matches, defeating every D-III team on their schedule, and finished with the top ranking in the D-III national poll for the first time in Hopkins history. Furthermore, they won 17 games against Division I opponents and for the first time cracked the national collegiate top 20, ending the regular season ranked 17th against mostly D-I schools.

Division III water polo lacks a national championship tourney, but the Jays won the D-III eastern championship for the second consecutive year. Sophomore Sean McCreery (front row, third from right) was named 2005 American Water Polo Coaches Association Player of the Year, and head coach Ted Bresnahan was named Coach of the Year. — Dale Keiger
