Working wonders
Elizabeth Austin ties a particular green satin ribbon around
her wrist whenever she could use a little luck, whether it
be at exam time or for a job interview. That very same
ribbon was on her wrist at the 2001 JHU Student Employee of
the Year awards ceremony, held April 4 in the Garrett Room
of the MSE Library at Homewood.
For Austin, a senior who had been
nominated twice before, it was now or never to claim the big
prize. Her employers had shared in her disappointment and
this year came out in force to support her. Needless to say,
when the time came to announce this year's winner, no sooner
was the word "Elizabeth" uttered when a chorus of cheers
erupted from Austin's table.

SOM lauds best young
researchers
These are some heady times for Hong-Sheng Li, a postdoctoral
fellow in the School of Medicine's Biological Chemistry
Department. He is 7,500 miles from his home in China
studying at "the world's top institute of biomedical
research," he recently became a father, and this week both
Li and his wife, Jianwu Bai, a predoctoral fellow in the
same department, will be presented with prestigious Young
Investigator Awards.
Now in its 24th year, Young Investigators'
Day is an annual presentation of awards to promising pre-
and postdoctoral researchers in the School of Medicine. The
event--perhaps the ultimate sophisticated science fair for
grown-ups--celebrates the often seminal work conducted by
the best and brightest. The 2001 awards ceremony will be
held on Thursday, April 12, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the
Mountcastle Auditorium of the Preclinical Teaching Building,
JHMI campus.
