The British ambassador to the United States, Sir Nigel
Sheinwald, will speak on "Keeping
Markets Open: What's Next After the London G20 Summit," at
the Johns Hopkins Carey
Business
School's Leaders & Legends lecture series on Tuesday,
June 4. It will be held from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at
the Renaissance Harborplace Hotel.
With policy-making experience in cities ranging from
Moscow to Brussels to London, Sir Nigel is
deeply involved in efforts to coordinate the European and
American responses to the world's worst
economic crisis since the Great Depression.
A veteran statesman and negotiator, Sir Nigel has
guided Britain's communications with
governments in the Middle East, the Americas and Asia.
Before being appointed to his present post,
he served as foreign policy and defense adviser to the
prime minister and head of the Cabinet Office
Defence and Overseas Secretariat.
Throughout his distinguished diplomatic career, Sir
Nigel has played a key role in many world-changing
decisions and agreements. In 2003, as British ambassador to
the European Union, he
effected a landmark agreement in which Gen. Moammar Gadhafi
renounced terrorism and forfeited
Libya's weapons of mass destruction. He later served as
Prime Minister Tony Blair's top foreign policy
adviser, and in 2007 secured the release of 15 British
sailors held captive by Iran.
As ambassador since 2007, Sir Nigel heads the British
embassy in Washington, D.C., and
oversees nine consulates-general located throughout the
United States. He joined the British
Diplomatic Service in 1976 and has served in Washington,
Brussels and Moscow, and in a wide range of
policy jobs in London.
