Noting the Johns Hopkins Lacrosse
Program
The Johns Hopkins
men's lacrosse program boasts one of the most storied traditions
in college athletics. Since the program was founded in 1883,
Hopkins has posted a 766-246-15 (.753) record and won an
unprecedented 42 national championships, including a record seven
NCAA titles.
Johns Hopkins
made its 27th straight trip to the NCAA Championships in May.
This is the longest streak in college lacrosse and the longest
active streak at the NCAA I level in any team sport. Only the
University of Miami baseball team (26 straight trips to the
NCAAs) and the University of North Carolina men's basketball team
(24) are even close to Hopkins' impressive streak.
With Rob Doerr,
Brian Carcaterra, and A.J. Haugen all earning First Team
All-America honors in 1998, Hopkins now boasts a national-best
163 First Team All-Americans since the program began in 1922.
The Blue Jays
have continued to succeed despite playing the most difficult
schedule in college lacrosse. The same will hold true in 1999 as
Hopkins will play all four 1998 Final Four participants,
including three straight (Princeton/Loyola/Syracuse) to open the
season. Since 1991, Johns Hopkins has played 27 of the 28 teams
(not including appearances by JHU) that have advanced to the
Final Four (during the season that they have advanced). The only
exception came in 1994, when Brown made an appearance in the
semifinals, but did not play Johns Hopkins during the season.
Johns Hopkins
made nine straight appearances in the NCAA
Championship game from 1977-85. Since the NCAA began sponsoring
the championship in 1971, no other team has made more than three
straight appearances in the title game.
Johns Hopkins
produced 10 players who were selected to the 25-man NCAA Silver
Anniversary Team in 1995. The next two closest schools produced
four players on the squad.
