Clark Hall move-in begins
After nearly two years of construction, Clark Hall is flinging open its doors, preparing to greatly expand biomedical engineering research and instruction on the Homewood campus.
   The sturdy three-story red brick structure is Homewood's first new building devoted solely to research and education since the 1990 dedication of the Bloomberg Center for Physics and Astronomy. Its opening also heralds the creation of a new academic quadrangle surrounding Garland Field.
   The new building, designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects of New York, houses ultramodern laboratories and offices, but its exterior features a classical design reminiscent of the campus's earliest Georgian-style buildings. Full story...

Krieger School names first dean of faculty
Daniel Weiss, a professor of art history and former chair of the department, has assumed the new title of dean of the faculty of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. The new position reports to Krieger School Dean Richard McCarty. Weiss said that he and McCarty envisioned the new position as a way of making sure that the Dean's Office can help faculty and departments address concerns and further their planning in a more timely manner.
   "The job of the dean of the Krieger School has become increasingly complex," said Weiss, who served as senior adviser for academic affairs in the year leading up to his appointment as dean of the faculty. "There is more that we would like to do for faculty and departments, and as we prepared to implement the Krieger School Strategic Plan, which includes a significant development effort, we concluded that we needed to take steps to leverage Dean McCarty's time more effectively and to improve the ability of the Dean's Office to serve the interests of the faculty." Deal is set for Hopkins travelers
The university's Office of Purchasing and Johns Hopkins Health System have negotiated an agreement with WorldTravel BTI to serve as the primary travel services partner for the Johns Hopkins Institutions.
   The agreement, effective immediately, is the result of an effort by the Business Processes Improvement Committee's travel subcommittee to provide university and health system employees with reduced costs and dedicated support for travel-related services.
   WorldTravel will service both business and personal needs. While using the travel service for business-related trips is not mandatory, Gary Ostrander, chair of the BPIC travel subcommittee, says the associated cost savings and convenience should make WorldTravel the preferred choice.
