Today Physical Review Letters published a historical paper by the LIGO/Virgo Scientific Collaboration reporting the first detection of gravitational waves from merging black holes. The American Physical Society (APS) asked me to write a Physics Viewpoint article on this breakthrough event in gravitational physics.
