Graduate Programs of Study
Carrying on a tradition that began in 1876 with the founding of Johns Hopkins, each department within Arts and Sciences and Engineering encourages independent research and creative thinking. The departments are notable, first, for their wide-spread recognition, and, second, for the range of interdisciplinary programs they offer. And if the existing programs don’t match a student’s interests, faculty will help structure an individual course of study in the humanities, natural sciences, quantitative studies, engineering, or social and behavioral sciences.

Funding
Most doctoral students receive either full or partial fellowships, which include a tuition waiver as well as a stipend. In addition, there are fellowship awards made directly to students by government agencies, private foundations, and philanthropic corporations. The Office of Student Financial Services administers other aid in the form of long-term student loans and on-campus employment. Notification of awards is made no later than the first week of April, and recipients are expected to respond to the offer no later than April 15.

Degree Requirements
Major research activities and laboratories are integral to the Hopkins experience. There are no formal school-wide requirements measured in numbers of courses or credits. Each program is planned in consultation with a department or committee after reviewing the individual’s attainments and areas of interest.

Specific requirements for the master’s and doctoral degrees include a minimum of two consecutive semesters of registration as a full-time, resident graduate student and certification by a department or program committee that all departmental or committee requirements have been fulfilled. The focus of the doctoral program is the completion of research with the end result of a dissertation.

The Whiting School of Engineering offers master’s degrees through its programs. The Krieger School of Arts and Sciences awards master’s degrees in its Writing Seminars program.

Admissions Information
General admissions inquiries can be directed to the Graduate Admissions Office. Applicants should contact prospective departments for specific questions about departmental application requirements and deadlines. The completed application, transcripts, letters of recommendation, GRE scores, and other supporting documentation are to be sent directly to departments.

Anthropology

I think Baltimore is a unique place.  Once you wander off campus and start exploring all its nooks and crannies, you can come away with wonderful encounters.... what other city can boast a synchronized swimming-based performance art group?

A real factor for me in coming to Hopkins was whether or not I would get to do the kind of dissertation research project that I wanted to do.  I was determined to do U.S.-based research, which is generally discouraged by many anthropology departments.  The current dissertation committee was unequivocal in their support of my project.  They pushed me at every step, but they also pushed themselves.  My fellow students also took an interest in my project, and we exchanged ideas and reading lists at every stage of the program.  With my dissertation research now completed, I can honestly say that the dissertation I will write is one that I could only have written in my department at Hopkins.
