International Students

Student Visa Information
The Office of International Student and Scholar Services is prepared to assist all international students who have been accepted for full-time graduate study. Upon your admission to the University you will be contacted by this office to verify that you have adequate financial resources to meet the costs of living and study in the U.S. Following this verification and a review of your application for proof of proficiency in English (TOEFL score), you will be sent the appropriate Certificate of Eligibility to assist you in obtaining your student visa. You will also receive instructions for making your visa application, and general information to help you prepare for your studies in the U.S.

Finances
Financial aid for graduate study is very limited. Awards are made on the basis of academic achievement to students of promise and ability. International students who are academically qualified are eligible to apply for department fellowships but are not eligible for federal and state government funds used to provide scholarships or loans. A student must be prepared to make arrangements for all possible financial needs before leaving his or her country, and should not plan to obtain scholarships, fellowships, employment, or other financial assistance after arriving in the United States.

Tuition, insurance, and entrance fees must be paid in full at the time of registration or enrollment for the semester. A substantial late fee will be assessed if registration is not completed within the normal registration period. If your government regulations require you to present a letter certifying that you are eligible to enroll for courses at the University, please request this letter at the earliest possible date.

Cognitive Science Department

I interact with faculty on three levels––as teachers, as mentors, and as colleagues. Faculty in my department are excellent teachers and also excel as mentors. Their strongest attribute is that they are absolutely, undeniably rigorous when it comes to relating our work to theory. Everything we do is done in order to test or build theories of cognition and this means the link between our experiments/analyses and the theory must be clear. I value this so highly because it means the faculty are not satisfied with hand-wavy explanations or vague indications… everything must have clear roots in the theory we are trying to build or explain.
